Inlays & Onlays
If you have teeth that have damage to more than half of the biting surface you would be an ideal candidate for an inlay or onlay.
Inlays and Onlays Defined
Inlays and onlays are small pieces used to restore damaged teeth. They are made of resin in different materials; gold, composite, or porcelain. Inlays, similar to fillings, are used inside the tooth’s cusp tips. Onlays are used for restoration/reconstruction purposes that will extend over the tooth’s cusps.
Gold was originally the go-to option for many patients but in recent time porcelain has gained more popularity thanks to its appeal and durability.
Inlay and Onlay Application
You can expect to have two appointments when having inlays or onlays. We first remove the filling you want to replace or remove the decayed or damaged area of your tooth. We can then start preparing the tooth for your onlay or inlay. We take an impression to ensure a perfect fit and proper bite then send to the lab to be constructed. We can then schedule your next appointment and put a temporary sealant on your tooth in the meantime.
The second visit involves us removing the sealant and trying out the onlay or inlay to ensure it properly fits. Once this is determined we can then bond the onlay or inlay to the tooth and polish it so it’s smooth and identical to your other teeth.
Superior Inlay and Onlay Dental Services
We would like to note that while traditional fillings are still an option, they actually weaken your tooth. Whereas an inlay or onlay could be an ideal alternative if you want to avoid that. They are directly bonded to your tooth and strengthen the tooth rather than weaken it. In addition, traditional fillings typically last up to 6 years while inlays or onlays can last twice as long, if not much longer.
