Wisdom Teeth

The ordinary adult will have 32 teeth by the age of 18, 16 on the top and 16 on the bottom. Every single tooth in the mouth has its own name and distinct purpose. The teeth in the front, bicuspid, canine and incisor teeth, work to grab and bite food into smaller chunks. While the back teeth, the molars, work to grind food to the correct consistency to be ingested.

The problem here is that most mouths are only able to comfortably fit 28 teeth. The extra 4 teeth are third molars otherwise known as wisdom teeth. These teeth can crowd the jaw and become painful.

Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

The third molars or wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt and they do not always have to be removed. When they are correctly aligned and the surrounding gum tissue is in good health they do not have to be extracted. This is usually not the case however which is why it is such a common procedure. Extraction is required when they are unable to erupt correctly on the jaw. This can mean that they grow sideways, are only partially erupted or are stuck underneath the gumline. Teeth that are impacted can take a variety of positions as they try to find a route that will let them erupt.

These incorrectly located impacted teeth can cause a wide range of issues. Partially erupted teeth will have an opening around the tooth that will foster the growth of bacteria. This can lead to infection, inflammation, pain, illness, and stiffness. The erupting tooth can sometimes put pressure on surrounding teeth and may misalign them. The most severe issues are when tumours or cysts start to form around the tooth. This can degrade the healthy neighbouring teeth and the jawbone. Fortunately, this can be remedied with extraction, that will solve the problems in the majority of cases. Removing wisdom teeth earlier on is usually preferable to waiting. This can prevent greater problems down the road and make the extraction procedure safer as well as easier.

Oral Examination

Through the use of X rays, doctors are able to effectively evaluate the positioning of your wisdom teeth. This allows them to accurately predict how they will or will not erupt and where there will be issues in the future. Research has shown that early assessment and treatment can lead to more ideal outcomes for the patient. Patients tend to be evaluated in their mid-teens by either their dentist, orthodontist or maxillofacial surgeon.

Your comfort is one of our top priorities which is why these procedures will be conducted under the appropriate anesthesia. We have the skills, knowledge and training to find the right anesthesia to suit your specific needs.

Extraction

The majority of wisdom teeth extractions are performed with local anesthesia, general anesthesia or laughing gas. We will go over all of these options as well as any potential surgical risks during the consultation appointment. After the teeth are extracted the gum tissue will be sutured. Bite down on the gauze pad to help mitigate any bleeding that may occur. You will be able to rest after the procedure in our office until you are able to be taken home. You will be given a postoperative kit that will include instructions, pain medication prescriptions, antibiotics and a follow-up appointment.
