Dental Implants

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts that are surgically placed directly into the jawbone where teeth are missing. They effectively act as root substitutes. Dental implants aim to be create a strong base for replacement teeth which will not only appear like natural teeth but feel and work effectively like them as well. The patient will regain the ability to eat pretty much anything and will have the confidence to smile fully with the knowledge that their teeth have a new natural appearance and their facial contours are preserved.

Your jawbone will bond with the titanium, building the secure foundation required for artificial teeth. The posts that extend through the gums will then be affixed to the implant. The posts work effectively as anchors for the replacement teeth. Dental implants are also helpful in preserving facial structure as well as preventing the deterioration of bone caused by missing teeth.

Evaluation

If you decide that implants are a viable option for you then you are to go through a dental/radiographic examination. Consultation appointments will provide the perfect space to discuss any concerns or specific considerations.

We realize that this may be an intimidating procedure and are ready to field any and all of your questions and concerns.

This is also the stage at which we will discuss fees and insurance options. Dental plans vary and it is important to know what your coverage is for implants, as some plans do not cover the procedure. We have lots of experience in this area and will help you through the experience.

The Surgical Procedure

For the majority of patients, placing dental implants will involve two separate surgical procedures. During the First procedure we will place the implants in your jawbone. The healing time will vary from patient to patient and is affected by an assortment of factors including bone density. For some patients implants can be restored immediately after they are placed.

After surgery the dental implants will be underneath the surface of the gums slowly bonding with the jaw bone, for about three to six months. During this phase the patient should be able to use temporary dentures and will be on a soft diet. This time gives your restorative dentist time to design the final bridgework or denture that will eventually improve not only aesthetics, but the function of your teeth.

Once the implant has fully bonded with the jawbone phase two can begin. The implants will be uncovered and a small healing collar will be attached. Two weeks after this, a general dentist will start making new teeth for the patient requiring a dental impression. At this point the posts or attachments can be joined to the implants. The replacement teeth are then made overtop of the posts. The whole procedure on average will take about six to eight months to complete. The majority of patients do not experience any real disruption in their day to day lives.

What Types of Prosthesis are Available?

A single crown can be used to replace a single missing tooth. Each replacement tooth is attached to its corresponding implant, meaning an implant is required for every prosthesis. A partial prosthesis, otherwise known as a fixed bridge, can supplant two or more teeth that are close by, and may need only two to three implants. A complete prosthesis or fixed bridge will replace all teeth on the upper or lower jaw. The amount of implants required depends on which kind of complete prosthesis is favoured; fixed or removable. A removable prosthesis or over denture attaches to a fixed bar or uses ball in socket attachments. While a fixed prosthesis is permanent it can only be removed by a professional.
