Periodontal Maintenance
It’s important that you see a dentist regularly to avoid periodontal disease which can cause many problems and eventually destroy the existing support of your teeth. How? Periodontal disease is when your gums are infected. Without immediate care you could face many more problems. Brushing and flossing every day can help you avoid dental plaque, which is the number one cause of gum disease for people who have a genetic risk.
The Role of Proper Oral Hygiene
It’s important to start a healthy oral hygiene regime at a very young age. Taking care of your mouth and teeth plays an important role in your overall health as you age. Periodontal disease has caused many adults over the age of 35 to lose more teeth than cavities have; think about that for a moment.
You can prevent periodontal disease and cavities simply by brushing and flossing every single day. Bacterial plaque is brought on when decay is present or during the progression of gum disease. It won’t be noticeable as it is colorless. It’s also a film that will be felt or noticed on your teeth (it sticks to them) along your gum line. Plaque consists intently forms on our teeth which is why daily brushing and flossing is so critical to superior oral health.
If you develop a periodontal disease and do not address it correctly (brushing daily) the plaque that is forming on your teeth every day can harden into a tartar-like substance, also known as calculus.
Factors That Increase the Risk for Periodontal Disease
There are certain lifestyle factors that can increase your risk for gum disease or other oral health problems including:
- Stress
- Teeth Grinding
- Jaw Clenching
- Poor Diet
- Diabetes
- Stress
- Smoking
- Medications
If you have problems with bleeding gums, whether it’s occasional or frequent, it could be due to the bacterial plaque in your mouth. Delaying immediate treatment could cause further problems including gum separation from your teeth or empty space (pocket) formation. Deterioration of the bone and tissue that keep your teeth and gums separate will take place if you leave periodontal disease untreated. This will lead to tooth loss.
Following a regular oral care regime and brushing/flossing daily can help keep your mouth in great health. In addition to daily brushing and flossing, you should also have regular visits to your dentist including regular cleanings. With regular dental visits your doctor can identify any potential problems before they become severe.
