Guided Bone & Tissue Regeneration
Treating gum disease has conventionally been treated by getting rid of the gum pockets that create gum disease. The pockets were eliminated by removing any affected gum tissue and smoothing any uneven bone tissue. This method may be still effective in fighting gum disease but there are new more effective methods that have emerged that are now commonly used. One of the most promising advancements is referred to as guided bone regeneration otherwise known as guided tissue regeneration. The procedure is used when there teeth that are in danger of falling out or to get the jaw ready for dental implants.
When periodontal disease takes hold pockets of degraded bone will form within the jaw. These pockets create even more ideal conditions for more bacteria and infection. The pockets often are treated using tissue regeneration, a surgical procedure. First the pockets are meticulously cleansed and then have a membrane placed between the pocket in the bone and the soft tissue. These membranes can either be bioabsorbable or not, meaning they may or may not need to be removed later depending on which kind is used. The purpose of the membrane is to cover the pocket to stop the faster growing soft tissue giving the slow growing bone tissue a chance to regenerate.
Where this procedure succeeds or fails usually hinges on whether the patient can follow the strict diet that companies it. Consult us to learn more and find out if bone regeneration surgery is the best solution for you.
