Retainers and Appliances

A retainer is a removable appliance designed specifically for your mouth that will either move or hold your teeth in place. Retainers are to be worn as directed by your orthodontist and you need to bring it with you to every appointment.

Your retainer should be worn at all times, including while you sleep, but not while swimming, eating or playing vigorous sports. You might find it hard to speak clearly when you first start wearing your retainer and this is normal. You will adjust to the retainer in a few days and be able to speak just fine again. You should avoid flipping your retainer with your tongue as it can damage your appliance, if not break it, and damage your teeth.
You should clean your retainer every day by brushing it just like you would your teeth. You can use toothpaste or a denture cleaner. Flossing should remain a regular part of your oral hygiene routine and careful cleaning of bonded wire retainers placed behind the front teeth is advised.

More often than not retainers are accidentally thrown away or lost but it’s important to take special care of your appliance. When setting it down while eating or brushing your teeth, etc. do not place it on tissue or a napkin. It could easily get tossed in the trash. Your retainer should not be placed in your pocket or any other place. When you are not wearing it your appliance should be in the case provided and designed specifically to store your retainer.

If you feel that your appliance isn’t clean enough do not boil it! Instead, give us a call and let us safely disinfect it for you.

You will experience soreness for a few days when you begin wearing your retainer, even more so once you have come in for an adjustment. However, your retainer may also need adjustment if you have a sore spot on your gums. If this is the case, call our office right away to schedule a visit.

If you lose or break your appliance you will be charged an additional fee for replacement or repair. Give us a call today if you need to schedule a consultation, need help with your appliance or simply have a question. We’d be more than happy to help you!
