Dentures for adults on ODSP are covered through a separate denture program, not the main dental schedule. It covers standard complete and partial dentures, plus repairs and relines, once your dentist's request is approved.
How ODSP denture coverage works
Everyday ODSP dental care, such as exams, cleanings, fillings and extractions, is set out in one provincial dental schedule. Dentures are handled differently. They are provided through a separate denture program, a discretionary benefit that is administered by Accerta and set at the municipal level.
In Hamilton, the City runs an adult denture program with its own schedule of services and fees. Because dentures sit in this separate program, they need to be approved before treatment begins.
What the denture program covers
Complete dentures
Full upper or lower sets to replace all the teeth in an arch.
Partial dentures
Removable partials that replace some missing teeth.
Denture repairs
Fixing cracks, breaks or fit problems in an existing denture.
Relines
Reshaping the fitting surface so a denture fits comfortably again.
Coverage is for standard, functional dentures. Premium materials or cosmetic upgrades may cost extra, and dental implants and implant-supported dentures are not covered.
Dentures need approval first
Your dentist or denturist submits a pre-determination to the program before starting. Once it is approved, treatment can go ahead and covered work is billed directly, so you are not paying upfront for what is covered.
How often can dentures be replaced?
Denture programs commonly authorize a new set about once every five years, if needed, and replacing a denture sooner usually requires prior approval. Because the program is run locally, it is best to confirm the exact rule with the Hamilton program or with our team before you plan a replacement.
Who can get dentures through ODSP
- ODSP recipients and their eligible spouses can access the denture program.
- Dependent adults, and adults on Ontario Works, may receive dentures through the local discretionary denture program.
- Eligibility and exact coverage vary by municipality, so it is worth confirming yours with us or your local office.
Dentures and the Canadian Dental Care Plan
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) also covers dentures. Complete and partial dentures are covered under the CDCP with pre-authorization. If you have both the CDCP and ODSP or Ontario Works, the CDCP is the primary payer and the provincial program can act as a second payer.
